Polyurethane over hardwax oil?

on

So I did some searches and it seems the jury is still out. I bought a benchtop which I want to use in a semi-outdoor area. It will get some light rain on occasion. I don’t want the damn thing to warp so I intended on finishing it marine varnish. I am not concerned about food safety as it wont have food on it. The problem is that it is apparently finished in interbuild hardwax oil and that is what is recommended for recoat however I am not happy with the finish and would prefer a glossy durable finish (hence my purchasing the marine varnish). I have read something about using a shellac as an in between? Or can I just rub it down with spirits and then apply the poly? Thanks in advance via /r/DIY https://ift.tt/3cMLk4a
