Removing burned-on exercise ball from floor furnace grate / buying the right grate size

First, let me preface this by saying my partner and I are complete idiots. We have a floor furnace and work from home, and sometimes we sit on exercise balls (once in a blue moon one of us will even use one of the balls for exercise!). Last night, one of the balls decided to have a roll around the living room, and ended up finding a cozy spot on top of the floor furnace grate (apparently this is called a register?). It popped and melted all over the grate, and filled the apartment with smoke. Everyone’s okay and we took out the grate, but now we either need to clean it, or get a new one. We’d obviously prefer to fix the one we’ve got, but it’s covered in melted rubber, as shown in the photo. I’m not sure what the exact material was. What would be the right way to do this?If this is not possible, we’d like to buy a new one. However, it seems we have a very strange hole size: 21 3/4″ x 32″. I can’t find anything like this online. Would it be okay to buy a 20″ x 32″ grate instead, considering the grates seem to come with a pretty big border?Thank you for your help! via /r/DIY
