Ceiling electrical box install

I'm in the process of updating the kitchen. The ceiling is beadboard and faux wood beams across it. The previous owner installed some terrible track lighting that just looks terrible and i want something different.

The issue is, when I look to see how it's installed, they owner just cut line into the beadboard and ran the electrical. I don't think there is a ceiling box. I'd like to install a ceiling box but not sure I can do that like you'd do in dry wall (an assumption I'm making since I've never done this.)

My fear is I'd use one of those polycarbonate boxes with the flaps but the bead board would sag. Is this a legit concern or not? The weight of the fixture is about 3.5lbs
