Quick electrical help
I am replacing a switch and outlet in my bathroom, bought a new dimmer switch and GFCI outlet. I did not take pictures of the previous ones that were removed a while back. I am now having issues with what I thought was correct.
Single switch with single light.
Single outlet in same box as switch
Into the box are two sets of wires:
Black + Gray + Ground
Black + Red + White + Ground
Both grounds are connected, and connected to the box. Tested Negative for power
Both black wires are connected together. Tested Positive for power
Red wire is not connected to anything currently. Tested Positive for power
White wire is not connected to anything currently. Tested Positive for power
Gray wire is not connected to anything currently. Tested Negative for power
I have tried what I thought was the right combination, but the outlet immediately trips, I have since re-read the instructions, and watched some youtube videos, but nothing mirrors what I have in this house.
I am sure I am missing some details, I am hoping this is a common pattern (3 wires, 4 wires) that someone might be able to know quickly what's what. I don't currently have a multimeter to know which wires go exactly where, I can get one if needed, currently testing with a Klein outlet testing thing.
Sorry for the dumb question!
