DIY Furnace Filter Relocation

I bought a new house last year and my furnace and furnace filter (14x25x1) are in the very back of the crawlspace and its a pain to get in there every 3 months to change out the filter. Our air return is under the stairs and has an 8×20 opening on either side of the stairs (https://i.imgur.com/8yxF2za.jpg)

My thought was to order some 8x20x2 or 8x20x4 filters from Filterbuy or Filterking and put them on both sides of the return and have quicker access so I'm more likely to get them replaced at the proper intervals. I was thinking Id screw some thin wood strips on all sides at the proper depth so they would not get sucked through .

Would this work? Or is there something I'm overlooking? Thanks!
