Kitchen Remodel – Looking for cabinet and countertop recommendations

We're getting ready for a kitchen remodel and wanted to get advice from folks who have done this before and can share what they loved and hated, especially in regards to cabinet sources and countertop types.

In general, I think we are looking for basic but nice painted Shaker cabinets, and are talking with a few local kitchen design shops that supply cabinets (including Kraftmaid, Candlelight, and Yorktowne) and looking at some online RTA spots (Barker and Scherrs). For countertops, I think we are mostly interested in a solid surface stone type counter, but that could be Quartz / Corian, or could be soapstone, marble, or other natural stone.

We'd love any recommendations on favorite options other folks have tried, or stories on what to avoid and why. Thanks!
