2 way switch in a 3 way system (US)

So, I replaced a light switch in my kitchen to match the color. It is a 3 way system, with a switch on both sides of the room. I accidentally used a 2 way switch. It was working fine until the other switch was used and the breaker tripped. When I reset the breaker, everything comes on except the light that the switch controls. I replaced it with a 3 way switch and it still doesn't work. I have tried different wire combinations and compared to the other switch and other circuits in the house. Did I fry a wire or something?
