A good way to secure furniture into plaster and lathe?

I want to secure two bookshelves to my plaster and lathe wall. I've done a bit of research, and all of the different advice is confusing. I really don't want to ruin my walls, but I've been dying to put up these shelves for so long. I think they need to be anchored because I have cats and these shelves have glass doors.

The thing I found and considered going with was toggler brand toggle bolts, but I see conflicting information about whether or not you can use that with old plaster walls.

Do I need to find studs? It is notoriously difficult to find studs in this sort of wall. Might be able to borrow a magnetic stud finder from someone I know.

I'm pretty lost so any advice would be awesome
