Need ideas for sound dampening

I need ideas to muffle background noise in online lessons. I’m working from home but my students are in the classroom. I do speaking and reading tests with them so it’s important that I can hear them clearly. The problem is the noise from other students and teachers. The school budget is very tight and the students are aged 4-10. We’ve tried cheap headsets with built in mikes. All broke within 2 weeks plus the background noise was only marginally better. The school is using a Kindle tablet and Zoom. I’m thinking of trying cardboard panels with foam glued on to make a partition. Could this possibly help? Also would such partitions need to be only in front of the child or behind as well? Thanks for any ideas.
