Do I really need to apply polyurethane to this board?

I'm looking for shelves that I can use for book case mount (already installed). It's one of those metal rail setups that runs vertically and that brackets can be slotted into and the shelves set on top. I'm using cheap rubbermaid shelves right now and they are bending from the weight. I'm considering getting these hardwood shelves from Home Depot: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Interbuild-3-4-in-x-12-in-x-4-ft-Square-Edge-Golden-Teak-Finish-Acacia-Project-Panel-Hardwood-Board-668776/309854708?MERCH=REC-_-pipsem-_-309854681-_-309854708-_-N&

The page says they need a coat of polyurethane or the like applied. Is this necessary though if they are going to be indoors? What would happen if I didn't? These are the only finished boards I could find that fit the brackets I already have installed.
