Installing vinyl floor and there’s a 2×4 from an old wall running through the center of the room, what is the best way to remove it and get the floor level?

I'm helping a friend install luxury plank vinyl flooring and running through the center of the room there's a 2×4 that was the base for the framing of a wall that was demolished. The ends of the 2×4 go under trim and two other 2x4s running perpendicular that are attached to the walls. The subfloor is particle board. I tried googling it, but couldn't phrase it well enough to get a specific answer, all of the search results were general flooring installation instructions. If I cut it and pried it out would I have to get a sheet of particle board to fill in the gap? I'm just starting out doing DIY home improvement and any advice helps.
