Leaking washer valve

The heating element in my dryer went out. Since it's a steam-based dryer it has a cold water hookup.

The valves are old, probably original, with the turn-style knob on top. I've seen many of these fail over the years.. and sure enough. Mine did. Fortunately, there was very little water coming out of the top.

So, I went out and replaced them both with ball valve style. Unfortunately, the cold side is leaking at the base. See photo of highlighted area:

I've applied 2 layers of tape, and I've tightened it enough that any further attempts at tighten will definitely be an over tighten.

Any suggestions on what else I can do?
