I’m stuck on an electrical switch issue and need some help
I'm doing updates to the house. There was a switch at the top of the stairwell and one at the bottom and both controlled the stairwell light. I painted and changed the switch at the top which only had two wires and a ground wire to it. Now I have tried three different switches and none of them allow the light to be independently controlled by either switch like it was before.
It used to be that each was like a toggle, if you moved either up or down the light would switch to the other state, on or off.
Now, the one I replaced has to be up for the light to be allowed to be on and the switch I didn't change can be used like a regular switch.
I'm very confused and also I'm an idiot because I threw away the last switch already thinking I didn't need to keep it because it only had 3 wires total which meant I couldn't put wires in the wrong places.
