Are metal poles an acceptable alternative to wooden 4x4s for sunshade support posts?
I’m putting up a 12’x16’ fabric sunshade in my front yard. Two of the four attachment points will be on the house, so those are taken care of. I still need to figure out the correct choice for the other 2 attachment points.
The standard solution seems to be 4×4 posts set into the ground with concrete. I am capable of doing this, but having such thick supports would look bad in the location I have in mind. I am considering substituting aluminum tubing for the 4x4s since it would look much better.
My thinking is that the tubing can be set into the ground using a post hole digger (10’ tall tube, 2’ underground). I can use guy wires going the opposite direction of the sunshade to counteract the tension from the shade if necessary.
Does this seem like it would be a strong enough alternative to 4×4 posts? I’m open to other suggestions if you have any, but this is the front runner so far.
