Canoe Repair

So I bought a canoe at an REI Garage Sale that advertised “cosmetic damage”. Upon purchase, I didn’t really see anything too egregious. I went to pick it up the next day to find that I overlooked a gouge in the side of the hull that’s deep enough to reveal the layer below the HDPE coating.

I’ve never done a canoe repair, so this is going to be new territory for me. My plan is to sand the area down, solder plastic from a laundry detergent jug into the gouge and mold it, sand it, and repeat until the process is finished.

Does that sound like the right way to do this?
